Much of the equipment, machinery and systems on a modern vessel are covered in the various guides in the ShipInsight series dedicated to particular aspects of the ship. There are however, many pieces of machinery and systems to be found all around a ship that are not.
This is not because they are unimportant – very little if anything on a ship is not there for a very good reason – but because they either exist as stand-alone equipment or are part of a more extensive system but not necessarily a core element. Coming in the first category are things such as watertight doors, inert gas generators or freshwater generators and in the second equipment such as pumps and heat exchangers which are found in ballast water treatment systems, fuel systems, heating and air-conditioning and the like. Some of these systems are covered by regulation but many are not.
