Last year saw the start of the rollout of ECDIS to ships built prior to 2012. The first ships affected were tankers above 3,000gt. This year the rollout moves on to include existing cargo ships (those built before 2012) above 50,000gt.
In terms of num- bers of affected ships, this year’s tranche is actually the smallest of the retrofit programme accounting for a maximum number just short of 3,300. Last year by comparison the number of affected ships was more than double. The final two tranches to be covered – existing cargo ships between 20,000gt and 50,000gt in 2017 and ships from 10,000gt to 20,000gt in 2018 will account for the largest number of vessels.
