The IMO decision made last year that would aspire to a zero emission policy for future ships has pleased environmentalists but set a challenge for science, technology and ship operators themselves. How exactly the IMO's vision is to be achieved is something that it cannot answer because it is a regulator rather than a manufacturer.
The Debating Decarbonisation guide is somewhat different to most of our other guides as there is as yet no regulation to comply with. It is a selection of industry views from some of the companies and organisations that will be producing and evaluating the means by which the IMO's ambitious targets may be met. This is just the beginning of the debate and doubtless new ideas and technologies will emerge over the coming years and decades. As to whether they will be sufficient to produce the desired result remains to be seen.
