Hyde Marine’s GUARDIAN-US system was granted type-approval by the USCG on 29 April bringing the number of ballast water treatment systems type-approved by the USCG to 30.
The Coast Guard Marine Safety Center issued the 30th U.S. Coast Guard Ballast Water Management System Type Approval Certificate to Hyde Marine after a detailed review of the manufacturer’s type approval applications determined the systems met the requirements of 46 CFR 162.060.
The treatment principle of the GUARDIAN-US consists of filtration and UV treatment at intake and UV treatment at discharge. This approval covers models with maximum intake treatment rated capacities between 60 m 3 /h and 3,000 m 3 /h. No limits on salinity have been imposed and the system is certified for use with water temperatures between 0 and 40°C and with a hold above 24 Hours and a UV-dose >170 mJ/cm2.
As a US built system it meets the requirements of 46 CFR 111.105 and may be installed in hazardous locations to which it is certified on a US flag vessel. The system’s control panel and power supply panel must remain outside of hazardous locations. The BWMS may be installed in hazardous locations to which it is certified on a foreign flag vessel subject to approval of the foreign administration.
A further six applications for US type-approval by other system makers are pending and four more applications for amendments to type-approval are in hand by systems already type-approved.
