Following successful testing of its Aquarius UV ballast treatment system, Wärtsilä announced that it has now been submitted for USCG Type Approval. The company’s alternative BWMS technology, the Wärtsilä Aquarius EC (Electro-Chlorination), was granted USCG Type Approval in August 2018. The USCG application for the Wärtsilä Aquarius UV system covers versions with flows between 50 – 1,000m3/h.

In addition to the Wärtsilä Aquarius UV application the USCG has also received a type-approval application for the Cathelco Evolution Ballast Water Management System manufactured by Cathelco which was acquired by Evac earlier this year. This application is also for a UV system and covers versions with flows between 34 – 1,500 m3/h.

A further application has been made by Techcross for its Electro-Cleen system but this is for an amendment to the type approval given for the system in June this year. Amending applications are necessary to cover variants with different major components to the system tested for type approval.
