While the world of shipping waits for a decision on the final result of the IMO’s recount of the Ballast Water Convention ratifications, the US Coast Guard has posted some guidance on its views of treatment systems. In all there are six documents including one that explores the thorny subject of viable vs living when comparing the IMO and US regulations on the effectiveness of treatment systems. Although there is no definite conclusion it is interesting to follow the thought processes that may determine if some systems already with type approval under one regime will be acceptable under the other. For those with enquiring minds, the document can be accessed here and you can download the ShipInsight In-Depth Guide to Ballast Water Treatment here.
