Germany-based SKF Marine’s BlueSonic ballast treatment system has become the 41st system to be given USCG type-approval.
The type approval was certified on 14 April and covers systems with capacities between 100 and 1,500m3/h
The treatment principle of the SKF BlueSonic BWMS is based on filtration, ultrasonic waves, and UV treatment at intake, and ultrasonic waves and UV treatment at discharge.
Operational Limitation listed on the certificate are limited only to a holding time greater than 24 hours and a minimum UV intensity of 260w/m2.
The system is not considered suited to US-flag vessels or for hazardous locations on foreign flag vessels.
