Six months after submitting the applications for its OceanGuard ballast treatment system, China-based Qingdao Headway Technology have been awarded the twelfth USCG type approval certificate.

The treatment principle of the OceanGuard system according to the certificate consists of filtration with electrolysis (the company itself prefers the term electrocatalysis) during uptake and neutralisation during discharge. The approval covers models with maximum treatment rated capacities between 65 m3/h and 5,200 m3/h.

Along with three other systems (Samsung’s Purimar, Sunrui’s Balclor and Wärtsilä’s Aquarius EC) This system has not been shown to meet the requirements of 46 CFR Subchapters F and J, and therefore may not be installed on US-flagged vessels.

Nine other systems are awaiting a decision on USCG type-approval certification having already submitted their applications.
