Two related ballast treatment systems developed by South Korean manufacturer NK Co have been granted type-approval by the US Coast Guard.

The NK-O3 BlueBallast II and NK-O3 BlueBallast II+ systems both make use of ozone sterilisation and have treatment capacities of between, 200 and 8,000m3/h.

However, the basic system is limited for use in waters that are Brackish or Marine with a salinity level above 1 PSU whereas the Plus model has no operational limitations and can be used in water of any salinity including fresh.

Both systems have a minimum hold time of 24 hours.

The successful application brings the total number of ballast treatment systems with USCG type-approval to 29.
