Knutsen seeks USCG type-approval for KBAL ballast system

Posted on:

A new application for US type-approval has been received by the Coast Guard Marine Safety Center. The application made at the end of July is for the KBAL Ballast Water Management System manufactured by Norway-based Knutsen Ballast Water AS.

The system was developed in house by Knutsen and has been installed on 14 of its shuttle tankers and LNG carriers. The filter-less system combines a pressure vacuum and UV for treatment.

Knutsen received type-approval from the IMO in 2012 and the system has been undergoing tests for the USCG approval in all water salinities.

The application means there are now five systems awaiting first USCG type-approval and 34 systems already approved.
