Fujairah, one of the world’s most important bunkering hubs has become the latest to place a ban on the use of open loop scrubbers on ships operating in its waters.

The Port of Fujairah which is the authority of the UAE port yesterday issued Notice to Mariners No 252. The notice is addressed to all agents, bunkering companies, de-slopping companies and oil terminal users. It is very brief consisting of just two sentences; “Please be advised that Port of Fujairah has decided to ban the use of open-loop scrubbers in its waters. Ships will have to use compliant fuel once the IMO 2020 sulphur cap comes into force”.

Fujairah has therefore joined a small but growing list of ports and regional zones where the use of open-loop scrubbers is banned.
