Yesterday the USCG issued the thirteenth ballast water type approval to Japan-based JFE Engineering Corporation after a detailed review of the manufacturer’s type approval application determined the system met the requirements of 46 CFR 162.060. It is the first type approval to be issued to a Japanese system maker.

The treatment principle of the BallastAce BWMS consists of filtration with chemical injection during uptake and neutralisation during discharge. The approval covers models with maximum treatment rated capacities between 500 m3/h and 3,500 m3/h. However, the approval does not include system configurations using NEO-CHLOR MARINE granules.

The system’s type approval certificate states that the system does not meet the requirements of 46 CFR Subchapter F or 46 CFR Subchapter J, and may not be installed on a U.S. flag vessel. The system is not intended for hazardous locations.
