Qatar petroleum have signed a $3Bn deal for an unspecified number of LNG carriers with China’s CSSC state-owned shipbuilder. The deal is being hailed as the largest order ever for a Chinese shipbuilder and involves reserving building slots through to 2027.
Analysts believe that the number of ships will likely be around 16.
The deal was signed in a virtual ceremony between Qatar Petroleum and Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Hudong), a wholly owned subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation Limited (CSSC)
The ship design in the contracted project is a new “G4 + Changhui” series LNG carrier of 174,000m3 independently developed and designed by Hudong Zhonghua. The ship type is a new design ship type launched by Hudong Zhonghua. According to CSSC, compared with similar existing size ships, the cargo capacity is increased by 800m3 and fuel consumption reduced by 8%.
