Just days after being floated out at Meyer Turku, Costa Cruises new LNG-fuelled flagship Costa Smerelda has suffered a minor fire on board.

The fire occurred on deck 15 of the vessel and, in common with many fires at shipyards, the fire among stored equipment was started by welding operations inside the ship. The fire was tackled initially by the yards own fire service and shortly after local fire brigades arrived to assist.

The fire was extinguished in under two hours after which work on the vessel recommenced.

Meyer Turku, the yard owners said around ten people were slightly affected by smoke inhalations and two others suffer minor injuries. Material damages were minor and there is no effect to the building schedule of the ship.
