Corvus Energy has announced that it has been selected by Damen Shipyards to supply the energy storage system (ESS) for four new battery-hybrid ferries for BC Ferries.
BC Ferries placed a repeat order with Damen Shipyards Group for four Damen Road Ferries 8117 E3 design—known by BC Ferries as the 'Island Class' vessels. The ferries are designed with the latest in advanced clean marine technology and are prepared for fully battery-powered, zero-emissions operation in the future. Until electrical charging systems are in place, the ferries will use a low sulphur diesel generator and battery hybrid system.
The four new vessels will provide ferry services between Vancouver Island and Quadra and Gabriola islands. Two new ferries will replace one older ferry on each route, resulting in more frequent service, more passenger capacity per hour and reduced vehicle queues in addition to lower emissions. They join their sister ships—Island Discovery and Island Aurora, the two Island Class ferries of the same design delivered to BC Ferries earlier this year—as an integral part of BC Ferries’ strategy to lower fleet emissions.
“Our Clean Futures Plan spells out our strategy to reduce GHG emissions by replacing legacy carbon intensive fossil fuelled vessels with ships using clean energy,” said Mark Collins, BC Ferries’ President & CEO. “Batteries supplied by Corvus Energy, a local company in British Columbia, help us achieve this goal for our Island Class ships.”
Corvus Energy provides battery power to more ferries than all other providers of energy storage systems combined. Beginning with the first zero-emission ferry, Ampere, Corvus Energy’s ESSs have been selected for a total of 60 similar short-distance hybrid and all-electric car ferries globally.
The Corvus Orca ESS is an ideal fit for short-distance ferry projects due to its ability to operate in either hybrid or all-electric mode, its high-performance specifications including fast-charge capabilities, and patented technology that exceed industry safety standards.
“Corvus Energy is honoured to once again be selected by Damen to supply the ESS to BC Ferries,” says Kim Strate Kiegstad, Vice President Sales at Corvus Energy. “It is a pleasure to work with Damen. They are highly experienced in integrating batteries into electric power and propulsion systems.
