Today the IMO has released the result of the recount into the ratification of the ballast water convention Forty-seven countries have now ratified the BWM Convention, substantially more than the 30 required, but their combined fleets comprise 34.35% of global tonnage, just under the 35 per cent required for entry into force and below the figure of 34.56% that the IMO said may have been reached in January. IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim has reiterated his request to countries that have not already done so, to ratify the BWM Convention as soon as possible in order to establish a certain date for entry into force. Once the convention has reached the trigger points the IMO can begin to develop the amendments that shipowners and others have been pushing for.
