China’s SunRui has become the fourth ballast water treatment system maker to achieve USCG type-Approval. The BalClor Ballast Water Management System is the second electrochemical system to achieve type-approval and is also the first non-European system to be type-approved. It applies a side-stream electrolysis technology and the approval covers systems with treatment capacities that range from 170-8500m3/h. The high capacity version of the system makes it suitable for larger vessel and earlier this year SunRui was successful in winning orders for twenty 400,000dqw VLOCs and ten 300,000dwt VLCCs from a number of Chinese shipyards. At least two other systems, Ecochlor from the US and Erma First from Greece are in the pipeline for approval.
